Eugene Schwartz 5 levels of awareness — match your copy to your audience.
Best for: Audience-segmented campaigns and funnel-stage copywriting.
Origin
Eugene Schwartz introduced the five levels of awareness in 'Breakthrough Advertising' (1966), considered one of the most influential copywriting books ever written. Schwartz's insight was that the same product requires entirely different copy depending on how aware the prospect is of their problem and the available solutions.
When to use it
Audience-segmented campaigns and funnel-stage copywriting.
How it works
- 1
Unaware — Lead with the problem
- 2
Problem Aware — Show a solution exists
- 3
Solution Aware — Position yours as the best
- 4
Product Aware — Prove it works
- 5
Most Aware — Give them the offer and urgency
Common mistakes
Writing 'buy now' copy for an unaware audience — they do not know they have a problem, so the pitch bounces off
Treating all readers as the same — Schwartz's recipe requires segmenting your message by awareness stage
Skipping awareness stages — you cannot jump from 'unaware' to 'most aware' in one piece of copy; each stage needs its own content
